Studying Dentistry in Riga
Degree Programme Structure: Bare your Teeth...
During your dentistry degree in Riga, you will work with patients early on, but not before undergoing training in the high-tech training centre – right next to the large university dental clinic in the Latvian capital.
Amount of study places: Dentistry in Riga
Every year, around 80 prospective dentists begin their studies in dentistry in Riga. The number of students in the RSU-based study programme is significantly lower than in the human medicine programme. The technological equipment is considered to be the best and most extensive in Northern Europe. The direct connection to the large dental clinic offers excellent opportunities.
Theoretical training, practice, exercises
The standard period of study for dentistry in Riga is ten semesters. During this time, students acquire a total of 300 ECTS credit points. The course relies heavily on learning in small, class-like groups, known as study groups. These groups usually consist of six to ten students. During the first two semesters, the course is understandably rather theoretical. In addition to phantom courses, however, students are venturing more and more into the adjacent dental clinic. Extensive scientific foundations such as molecular biology, biophysics, histology and anatomy are offered.
Training and studying in the ‘Pre-Clinic’: unique in Northern Europe
With 32 phantom head simulators, nine virtual simulators for reconstructive dentistry, four additional maxillofacial simulators and nine electron microscopes for histological teaching, the RSU Riga Dental Faculty is the best-equipped teaching facility in Northern Europe. In recent years, more than 1.6 million euros have been invested in the technology of this training centre.
German graduates receive the international title of ‘Medical Doctor of Dental Medicine’ upon completion of their studies. This allows them to start working as a dentist in training immediately after graduation.
